"Volcano’s Roar” is an original artwork printed on fabric and is part of Juliana Silva's "Dance Forms in the Street" art project. The designs delve into the joyful and healing roots of street carnivals and festivals, highlighting how ritual elements—visual symbolism, dance, music, and costumes—intertwine to showcase the joy and collective spirit of these events. The intricate patterns in this piece blend cultural influences inspired by the artist's visits to Colombia's Blacks and Whites Carnival. This particular print features both a jaguar (Panthera onca) and a melanistic jaguar (black panther), animals native to the Americas. These powerful creatures are used metaphorically to represent identity, roots, and strength. Traditionally, carnival artisans depict jaguars and panthers on giant floats, as the jaguar's roar is said to echo the nearby volcano, symbolizing the local community's resilience and vitality.
These vibrant textile works celebrate the mix of Afro-descendant, Indigenous, and Spanish influences, highlighting the rich multicultural heritage of these celebrations.
